Discover the rich gold mining heritage of Copeland Tops.
Touch relics from gold rush days at the heritage Mountain Maid mine, hidden deep in the cool rainforest at Copeland Tops State Conservation Area. Peek inside the eerie mine shaft, walk through some historic buildings and get up close to the old battery stamper, whirly-gig gold separator, air compressor and gold carts.
The tour reveals much of the rich gold mining heritage of Copeland which was once a bustling rush town after the valuable mineral was discovered at Back Creek in 1876. The steeply-sided valley was home to about 1,100 people and the 51 mines produced about 11 tonnes. The volunteer guides will also share their knowledge of fascinating information about the flora and fauna of the park.
Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, snacks and wear fully enclosed footwear.
HOW: Copeland Heritage Gold Mine tours depart Wednesdays and Saturdays (depending on availability of volunteer guides).
