Sydney Symphony Orchestra performs Compassion live on stage at the MEC.

Be swept away as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra presents the music of beloved Australian composer Nigel Westlake, including the award-winning song cycle Compassion featuring singer-songwriter Lior.

What happens when a great soulful voice meets the power of an orchestra?

Based on ancient texts, Compassion unites singer-songwriter Lior’s energising vocal range with acclaimed composer Nigel Westlake’s (Babe, Paper Planes, Miss Potter) orchestral writings. Moments of ethereal beauty and lyricism give way to harmonic innovations and dazzling percussion, as we’re swept up into that rare realm of artistry and collaboration that crosses cultural and emotional divides.
Commissioned by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and winner of an ARIA Award for Best Classical Album, Compassion is an ‘astonishing piece of Australian music’ (Russell Torrance, ABC Classic) and a luminous deep-dive into the power of human compassion.
Westlake’s Trumpet Concerto was written especially for the Orchestra’s Associate Principal Trumpet Brent Grapes. This ‘exhilarating and exciting’ (Limelight) work gives every opportunity for soloist and orchestra to shine bright like the golden gleam of brass instruments.
