Taree Film Society holds its opening screening at the Beryl Jane Flett Studio with the classic The Picture Show Man (G).

In the last days of silent movies, tight-fisted showman Maurice Pym (John Meillon), brings cinema to NSW country towns with his horse-drawn travelling picture show. His son Larry (Harold Hopkins) is the projectionist, and the dapper Freddie Graves (John Ewart) joins en route, to provide the piano accompaniment. When the film reel breaks down, they sing and dance to keep the crowd happy. They are horsemen, firemen, ladies’ men, but above all, showmen. Pym has worked the same circuit for years, but trouble brews when a former protégé (Rod Taylor) tries to step on to his circuit armed with a motor vehicle and the latest gear.
Based on the memoirs of Lyle Penn, the film is deliberately light-hearted, with superb comic performances from John Meillon and John Ewart as the last of the itinerant vaudevillians.

Taree Film Society is proud to host the movie’s musical director Peter Best who will introduce the film and hold questions and answers. Our beloved catering team will provide refreshments.

Taree Film Society’s screen and sound installation is proudly funded by the NSW Government.
