Jesus Christ Superstar - Taree Arts Council

Back in 1996 Taree Arts Council presented this work. Now, 27 years later, Director Dean Snook will present his updated and unique vision for 2023!

Debuting on stage in 1971, Jesus Christ Superstar is a sung-through rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. Loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the Passion, the work interprets the psychology of Jesus and other characters with much of the plot centred on Judas Iscariot, who is dissatisfied with the direction in which Jesus is leading his disciples.

Contemporary attitudes, sensibilities and slang pervade the lyrics, and ironic allusions to modern life are scattered throughout the depiction of political events.

The work traces the last seven days of the life of Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Judas fears that the compassionate movement, with Jesus at its leader, has become a personality cult, with many of Jesus' statements being taken up and twisted by his followers.
