MidCoast Council Mayor David West shares what he loves about the Barrington Coast: the jewel of the NSW lower mid north coast.
This magnificent part of the country offers a unique diversity and multitude of experiences. From the mountains and valleys to the rivers and oceans and everything in between, there is something here for everyone.
Whether it be for a short break, extended stay or a spontaneous trip, you will want to return again and again.
I moved to the lower mid north coast in 1987 and have spent more than 26 years representing the community serving in local government as a Councillor, Deputy Mayor and now Mayor.
My passion has always been for my family and community service. I believe the importance of work and home life balance is extremely essential in creating a healthy, happy and rewarding life. I maintain an open door attitude to the community but I also ensure I take time out to do things I enjoy.
There are always different local markets highlighting vibrant country and coastal living and showcasing the extreme talent of local artists and artisans.
My Barrington Coast
I love the local aboriginal description of the region, 'where the leaves touch the waters from the mountains to the sea'.
In my 33 years residing here I have found so many amazing locations by just jumping in the car with my wife and taking a spontaneous scenic drive at our own pace. Sometimes we end up at one of the many seaside villages, other times it's a little hinterland town.
There are always different local markets highlighting vibrant country and coastal living and showcasing the extreme talent of local artists and artisans. The area boasts high quality local produce including oysters and wine, making the Barrington Coast a "must taste" holiday spot.
The Barrington Coast is just so diverse! It offers breathtaking natural beauty including the world heriatge Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, the most extensive area of subtropical rainforest in the world as well as pristine lakes, rivers, Ramsar-protected wetlands and many national parks and state forests.
I love experiencing wildlife seasons and migration… and snow in the winter!
With a beach-drenched iconic stretch of coastline, another great way to spend sunny days in the Barrington Coast is at one of the beautiful beaches. There's over 190 km of uncrowded coastline to explore, some good for swimming and others for surfing…. for me, I enjoy strolling.
There are so many adventure-focused healthy lifestyle experiences plus sporting and recreational activities. I personally enjoy using these as a way to reconnect with family and friends. These include walking, kayaking, horse riding, cycling, golf, diving, whale watching and fishing. There are significant number of campgrounds including access to private lands and farms.
However you choose to experience the Barrington Coast, I have no doubt you will enjoy your time here. I look forward to seeing you here.
