Gloucester River Winery enjoys the most scenic setting of any winery in the Gloucester valley, you’ll love the intimate views of the stunning Buccan Buccans (the Bucketts Mountains).

Owner and winemaker John is passionate about his preservative-free wines, do try his chardonnay, his rose and more!

Gloucester River Winery boutique vineyard situated on 12 hectares by the Gloucester River grows and produces wines with no added preservatives. The on-site cellar creates small lot vintages of 200-500 litres.

The wine is handpicked and handcrafted in the cellar, not the laboratory, and varies from year to year. Each year’s tastes are driven by the climate, not what can be manufactured through blending. The wines are faithful to both their variety and the growing conditions.

Using 460 year old methods brought from Central Europe, the wines are characterful, often intense and completely authentic. No additives, no chemicals, no pesticides, or chemical sprays, no fertiliser other than that generated by the property’s cattle and turned into ‘cow pat tea’ before being sprinkled around the vines.

This is a vineyard that makes wine like it used to be made. Visit, taste, picnic by the river!

We had such a wonderful time on new years day on John's winery. We were three families with little kids and all of us had a great time (even the one person who doesn't drink any wine). John and Kate are lovely hosts full of great stories and very flexible and open to your needs. After the delicious wine tasting we were allowed to stay many hours still on his farm next to the river where we set up our own BBQ and food. What a lovey way of starting the first day of the new year. We will never forget this visit and brought home many bottles of wine!

I highly recommend this place. 10 Dollars per person wine tasting with cheese/bread. John is an excellent host and showed us how he makes wine and his general farm activities. He also was able to recommend great local products that I had no idea where here. We will definitely come back.

What an absolutely amazing and totally unexpected wine tasting experience. John and Kate were the ultimate hosts providing a stunning cheese platter and fresh hot bread and even provided fresh bones for our dogs. After the wine tasting we were then given a farm experience feeding the bull and cows and alpaca. Cannot recommend this boutique winery enough, it certainly made our Gloucester trip something special

Unmissable stop and experience. The tasting and overall experience was incredible- went with a group of 5 late twenties friends and had a ball, but it would be a blast at any age. John the owner is a true wine expert, has a genuine passion for all things culinary and is the embodiment of the best of Australia’s rural spirit. He is also a repository of incredible regional knowledge, having spent nearly 7 decades around Glouchester, and has plenty of great stories from his other life as a professor and traveller. The tasting included ample food, fruit, fresh bread, cheese, roasted pork and chocolate that was paired expertly with a comprehensive range of unique wines. I’ve been into wine for a decade and tasted across the globe, his little operation has some truly unique blends (must try the sour-sweet white, and the black Shiraz). Once the tasting and wine making facilities tour was done we headed to the rest of the farm to assist with feeding the cows and some off-roading. Incredible fun at any age. John is one of a kind, the experience at 10 dollars is perhaps the best value for money anyone could hope for. Call ahead in case he’s off somewhere else on the property.
